Cleaning

To ensure high performance and lasting durability, we recommend using the Drop & Drag Method for cleaning optical surfaces. Here are the steps to clean your optics:

-          Use a high-quality lens tissue or lint-free wipe.

-          Use a small amount of high-purity, reagent grade cleaning solution like isopropyl alcohol or acetone.

-          Place a small amount of the cleaning solution on one edge of the wipe. Do not apply directly to the optic. You want to have enough to cover the entire surface of the optic. Avoid over-saturating the wipe, as too much liquid can leave residue on the optical surface.

-          Drag the wipe across the optical surface:

o   Gently place the wet part of the wipe at one end of the optical surface.

o   In a single, smooth motion, drag the wipe across the lens in one direction (not back and forth).

o   The goal is for the liquid to evaporate as the wipe moves across, leaving no streaks or residue.

o   Never reuse the same wipe to prevent redepositing contaminants.

o   If necessary, repeat the process with a fresh wipe.

 

Storage & Handling

All optics from Infrared Optics Supply can be stored in their original packaging. They are always packaged in lint-free lens tissue and vacuum sealed to preserve the coating. Once you have removed your optic(s) from the packaging, here are some general rules to follow:

-          Store optics in a clean, dust-free environment to prevent dust and dirt buildup. Handle with gloves to avoid transferring contaminants.

-          Always use powder-free gloves when handling your optics. Residual oil from your hands can burn when exposed to high-powered laser beams, which can lead to coating damage/failure.

-          Avoid using vinegar or ammonia-based cleaners, as they can gradually break down the optic's coating.

-          Refrain from using water to clean your optics. If water is used, be careful not to allow water spots to form on the optical surface. They can lead to coating degradation over time.
